This is an important notification for those of you whose SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) records have recently been reinstated and who are currently in the process of applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or STEM OPT extensions.
Over the past few weeks, there have been multiple reports from students indicating that United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has been issuing additional requests in connection with these applications—specifically involving biometric appointments. It is becoming increasingly common for applicants in this category to receive notices to appear at local Application Support Centers (ASCs) to provide fingerprints, photographs, and other biometric data as part of their application processing.
We would like to emphasize the importance of regularly checking the status of your case on the official USCIS website using your receipt number. Timely monitoring can help you identify any action items or appointment notices that require your immediate attention. Missing a biometrics appointment can cause significant delays in processing or even result in denial of your OPT/STEM OPT application.
If your SEVIS record was previously terminated and has now been reinstated, your application may be subject to additional scrutiny, which is why biometric verification may be triggered in some cases. Although biometrics are not typically a standard part of the OPT/STEM OPT process for most applicants, it appears USCIS has started implementing them selectively for reinstated SEVIS cases—likely as part of increased verification procedures.

Here’s what we recommend:
- Check Your USCIS Case Status Regularly:
Visit https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do and enter your receipt number to track the progress of your application. - Watch for Official Notices:
If you receive any mail from USCIS, read it carefully and respond promptly. If it includes a biometrics appointment, make sure to attend the scheduled session with all required documentation. - Prepare for the Biometrics Appointment:
Bring valid photo identification (such as a passport or driver’s license), your appointment notice, and any other supporting documents USCIS may request. - Contact Your DSO or International Office:
If you are unsure about how your reinstatement status may affect your OPT/STEM OPT application, contact your school’s Designated School Official (DSO) for guidance. - Reach Out for Help If Needed:
If you are asked to provide biometrics and are unsure of the next steps, don’t hesitate to consult with your school’s international student office or an immigration attorney. Acting quickly and correctly is essential.
We understand that this can be a stressful and confusing time, especially for students managing the complexities of reinstatement, immigration processes, and post-completion employment options. Staying informed, proactive, and responsive can significantly improve your chances of a successful OPT/STEM OPT approval.
Please share this message with any fellow students who may be in a similar situation. We will continue to provide updates as we receive more information regarding changes in USCIS processing patterns.
If you have already received a biometric notice or have successfully completed it, feel free to let us know so we can better track the scope of this requirement within the student community.
